FRESHERS

Don't stress yourself too much with what will happen when you reach Newcastle nanti. Your most important mission is to:

Get yourself to Newcastle upon Tyne!
·
How will you get to Newcastle upon Tyne? By:
  • Plane
  • Coach/Bus
  • Train

British Airways, National Express, etc. are just suggestions, and the means of transportations that I have used. There are more though, but these are the least complicated ones, which I think are manageable untuk newcomers. This may be confusing too. I am not including fares, because they are subject to change. You guys can check that up sendiri online (:

PLANE - British Airways

From: London Heathrow Terminal 3
Destination: Newcastle Airport
Duration: May take 1.5 hour or less
Normal baggage allowance:
Checked baggage - 1 piece
Hand baggage - 1 piece of hand baggage (56cm x 45cm x 25cm) + a briefcase, laptop or handbag (45cm x 36cm x 20cm)

For more information about checked baggage and extra or overweight baggage:

COACH - National Express

From: London Victoria Station (Use taxi to get here from Heathrow).
Destination: Newcastle upon Tyne, Coach Station, St James Boulevard, Newcastle Upon Tyne
Duration: Could take 6 to 7 hours.
Luggage allowance: Two medium cases, at no more than 20kg each. Extra luggage, including awkwardly shaped items, will only be carried if there is space. Allowances on Eurolines services may vary.

Coaches may stop at a number of coach stations before reaching Newcastle - if it feels like 5 minutes or an hour after departing London and you think you have reached Newcastle - check again. Haha! Baiktah tidur. Not recommended!

TRAIN - National Express, National Rail, East Coast.

From: London Kings Cross [KGX]
Destination: Newcastle [NCL]
Duration: 3 hours

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU CHOOSE YOUR TRAIN JOURNEY, WITH ZERO (0) CHANGES. WHY?

Sometimes, changes may only take 2 minutes or 1 minute. I doubt you will be able to rush within that time scale, carrying your luggage from one platform to another, especially with your loads and baggages in hand.

NOTE:
For government scholarship students: Brunei Hall offers traveling expenses refunds for your first 2 weeks of arrival in the UK - hence, you can go in a group of 4 and pay a taxi straight to Newcastle. Brunei hall will refund your travelling expenses, provided that you keep the original receipts. Please do ask Brunei Hall again for assurance, as we didn't know about this in our first year. So, you should try and get this opportunity.

Welcome to Newcastle upon Tyne!

From Newcastle Airport or Newcastle Train Station you may choose one (or a whole bunch) of us to pick you up OR you may get a taxi (available at the airport and train station) from wherever you are and have yourself dropped off either at 130 Brighton Grove (female) or 10 Nunsmoore Road (male).

Once you have reached Newcastle we will take you from then on and guide you with every step of the way if you want us too, Insya-Allah. And then, you shall start settling out your:

University Registration
Settle out your fees, get your bank letter and get your Student ID! You might need to take these with you:
  • Passport
  • Acceptance letter from the University
  • Financial guarantee letter (for sponsored students)
  • Scholarship offer letter (for sponsored students)
  • Evidence of your qualifications, i.e. certificates + photocopied ones

Get a UK Bank Account (HSBC, Lloyds TSB, Natwest, Barclays, etc)
  • You will need a Bank Letter which will be obtained from your university
  • Passport
  • Done? Inform Brunei Student Unit (BSU) or your sponsor of your bank details – Allowance, babe!

Register with a Health Centre - NHS
Usually the NHS people will be at your university during the first few days of your induction week. If they are not in university, go to the nearest GP to register! This is very important!

Stagecoach UNIRIDER (bus pass) - £250.00 per year (as of 2015).
It is how most of us get around and go to university. It is cheaper to flash your bus pass rather than to pay each time you get on a bus. They will need your Student ID and a passport sized photo for this.

You can buy the bus pass here: https://www.stagecoachbus.com/newcastle-unirider.aspx

You will be needing a lot of passport sized photos with white background. Preferably bawa dari Brunei before you get here. It's quite expensive here.

We will show you around, take you shopping, and house hunting! (:
